Dreams, memories, and imagination pervade small town life to explore an extended family’s struggles as they grapple with a history of loss, betrayal, and love in the series adaptation of Jeff Lemire’s acclaimed graphic novel.  

Young Lester longs for excitement and an escape from Essex County. With the added grief of his mother’s death, the only way he can leave is through his imagination. By contrast, Lester’s great uncle Lou struggles with the onset of dementia and haunts his own memories in search of peace in Essex County.  Concurrently Anne, the country nurse burdened with her family’s buried secrets, and Ken, the long-suffering farmer, work through the repercussions on their lives of other people’s choices. As our characters come to terms with their collective histories, their interior lives begin to manifest through the power of magical realism—blurring the lines between reality, history, and imagination—weaving together this touching, cinematic, multi-generational and uplifting fable for our time.
